Louisa Jane Smith
Our Scottish Cousin
Immigration Documents
Introduction
Louisa Smith was related to the Irish John Smith family of Kimball, South Dakota. In 1908 Irish John and Susan Smith visited relatives in Scotland. Several years later Louisa made her way over to America leaving her family behind.
From old census records we knew the following Smith relatives left Scotland for America: Thomas, Patrick, James, Bridget and Louisa. Louisa was mother to the other four. What we did not know was that Louisas husband, Patrick, also traveled to America. We have found all immigration documents for these travelers except for Patrick Jr.
Smith Family
In 1908 Irish John visited this family in Scotland. Within a couple of years members of this family began to move out of Scotland to America. We have immigration records for four of the five who made the trip overseas: Bridget Smith, Louisa Smith, Patrick Smith Sr., and Thomas Smith. We do not have immigration records for Patrick Smith Jr., and he is the person who lived with the Irish John Smith family in the early part of the twentieth century. We continue to search for Patrick Juniors immigration documents.
Of these five who made the trip, only one went back to Scotland. Patrick Sr. did not stay in Wisconsin, but went back home to Scotland. Louisa, his wife, stayed with her children in America. Several of Louisa and Patricks children did not make the trip to Wisconsin.
