Thomas Smith

Our Scottish Cousin

Immigration Documents

Introduction

Thomas Smith was cousin to the Irish John Smith family of Kimball, South Dakota.  In 1908 Irish John and Susan Smith visited relatives in Scotland.  Several years later Thomas made his way over to America leaving his family behind.  Thomas departed Liverpool June 17, 1911, on the Campania and hit America one week later.  Later, his brothers, sister, mother and father would all make the same trip to America.

Smith Family

In 1908 Irish John visited this family in Scotland.  Within a couple of years members of this family began to move out of Scotland to America.  We have immigration records for four of the five who made the trip overseas:  Bridget Smith, Louisa Smith, Patrick Smith Sr., and Thomas Smith.  We do not have immigration records for Patrick Smith Jr., and he is the person who lived with the Irish John Smith family in the early part of the twentieth century.  We continue to search for Patrick Junior’s immigration documents.

Of these five who made the trip, only one went back to Scotland.  Patrick Sr. did not stay in Wisconsin, but went back home to Scotland.  Louisa, his wife, stayed with her children in America.  Several of Louisa and Patrick’s children did not make the trip to Wisconsin.

Who is Thomas Smith?  In 1908 Irish John and Susan Smith visited relatives in Scotland.  Irish John and Susan would have seen and talked to Thomas while in Scotland.  How is this family related to us?  Unfortunately, I can’t tell you just yet.

There are a minimum of three different ways this family ties into our own.  Thomas Smith’s great-grandparents were John Smith, Susan (Coyle) Smith, Patrick Greenan, and Margaret (McCarval) Greenan.  All came from County Monaghan.  Susan McPhillips’ mother was born Mary Smith.  Irish John’s mother was born ‘Catherine Greenan’.  Of course, Irish John could be cousin to Thomas through the Smith line.

John Smith of Lone Rock, Wisconsin

Who was this ‘John Smith’?  The immigration records indicate young Tom would be staying with John Smith in Lone Creek near Sandusky.   In 1910 the following Smith males lived in Bear Creek Township, Sauk County, Wisconsin:  James, Peter and Joseph.  I could not find a ‘John Smith’ living in either Bear Creek township or adjacent townships.  So it is difficult to know if this record is correct; however, there is no reason to believe the record is incorrect.

In 1900 there was one entry for a John Smith in Bear Creek Township.  It is a bit difficult to read this census record but it shows a ‘John Smith’ living with a Peter Smith family in Bear Creek.  Beside this ‘Peter Smith’ family lived a ‘Peter Smyth’ family.  You may notice Mary A. Benson is listed here.  Mary was Susan McPhillips’ bridesmaid.  Thomas Smith in America can be seen listed in the 1920 census as ‘Thomas Smyth’.  Anyway, these entries are still a mystery to us.
