The Census of 1901 – Introduction
Killybegs and Killagthee Civil Parishes
County Donegal, Ireland

Introduction
The Census of 1901 is important to Irish Genealogists. Modern Irish censuses began in 1821 and the population was counted each ten years thereafter. The English destroyed many early Irish census records. Other census records were destroyed in the Four Courts Fire at Dublin in the early part of the twentieth century. The 1901 Census is the earliest full Irish census which still exists. Surnames which fit into our own family genealogy are highlighted in these census results. Why have we added this information to our website? Perhaps some of those listed are our own distant relations.
The 1901 census for Killybegs area for the most part is listed alphabetically. That is, all except for Corporation townland. Corporation is identified strongly with Killybegs town; therefore, this census can be found intermingled with the other Killybegs town census records.
The Census of 1901

Other Old Pictures of Killybegs
The first picture shown below is Killybegs harbor and this picture was taken in the early part of the twentieth century. The last two pictures are older and are taken from pictures used in ‘Magic Lanterns’. Magic Lanterns were popular in the mid-nineteenth century to very early part of the twentieth century. Kerosene lanterns or candles were used as light sources. The middle picture shows Killybegs harbor and the town of Killybegs. The last picture shows the interior of the Catholic Church of Killybegs.
