| Campbell surname in Tipperary was not
common; however, a John Campbell lived in Gortnaskehy, which is located
in the parish of Kilnarath. We know that James Ryan claimed this as
their homeland, and we also know that the Hill families lived here,
also. Whether the Ryans also knew the Hills we do not know, but
considering that the entire population of Kilnarath was slightly over
2,000 residents, it would be safe to say that they were aware of each
other. Refer to the census information found in Campbells of Tipperary for additional content about this family surname. |
| There were only nine (9) parishes where
Campbells were known to live in Tipperary, but more significantly the
name Bartholomew was rare among them. As our research has shown,
one of the Ryan children sponsors was a Bartholomew Campbell. As
we look at the United States census for Allamakee County, Iowa, we also
see a Bartholomew Ryan living in Waukon.
The first record appears to start in 1870 and I did find a later one for 1900. The first shows an unusual name (most likely a census taker having difficulty understanding the dialect), but this same individual is later listed in 1900 as "Bartholomew". It is likely that he was a relative, and will be part of our future research, especially since he lists his birth country as "Ireland". If you would like to see other Campbells that lived in Allamakee County during the 19th century, see Additional Campbell Families. |
