Killoscully Tithe Applotment Record

Introduction 

Killoscully is located in the northern most portion of Newport Catholic Parish.  Gortnaskehy Townland, where our Ryan and Campbell ancestors lived, was located in Kilnarath Civil Parish.  Next door and to the north of Gortnaskehy was Killoscully Civil Parish.  We know James Campbell, Nancy Anne Campbell Ryan’s father, lived in Killoscully.  The parish marriage register lists his residence as Killoscully.  Nancy Anne was ‘Batt’ Ryan’s mother. 

Tithes were an income tax on farming, usually about one tenth of the annual income. These were used for the upkeep of the Church of Ireland and were paid from the time of the Reformation. Before the Composition Act of 1823 it was possible to pay them in kind instead of money. From the time of the Composition Act they were supposed to be paid in cash, and Tithe surveys were carried out in each Parish to assess what the income for that parish would be. Two people were appointed by each parish to carry out this assessment.  Not all land was subject to this tithe.  Pasture land was exempt as was any land owned by the established church.  Few town inhabitants were subject to this ‘tax’.  The list below shows only those people who indicated they would pay this tithe, even though they might think it unjust. 

A Little Lesson in the Irish Language 

You have seen a lot of Irish placenames but have no idea what they suggest.  So in this document we provide a short lesson in Irish placenames and what they mean.  We hope you enjoy the following tidbits because you will see these prefixes or suffixes listed with many Irish placenames. 

• "Kil" means "church" and there are plenty of churches in Ireland.  Killeen, the name of more than 80 townlands; nearly all from Cillin a little church; but a few from Coillin, a little wood.
• "Ennis" or "inish" means "island".
• "Knock" ("cnoc") is "hill" in Irish. "Knockalough" is a "hill near a lake". "Knockatober" is a "hill near a well".
• "Bally" (from "baile") is a "town".   Townlands in Irish Gaelic are known as ‘Ballyboes’. Ballycahan, Ballycahane; O'Cahan's town
• "Dun" often occurs in combination with person's names such as in Dundonald, Duncannon ("Conan"), Dun Aengus (a Celtic God originally), Dundalk ("Dalgan"). It means the same as "Doon" in Doondonnell and in Lisdoonvarna.
• "Clon" is a meadow.
• Some Gaelic words can be understood in more than one way. A "curragh" as in the "Curragh" of Kildare can be a race-course. In some placenames "curragh" may mean marsh.
• Barna; Bearna, a gap.
• Boola, booley; the same as Boley [Boley; buaile, a milking place for cattle.]
• Cluain [cloon], a meadow, a fertile piece of land among bogs, marshes, or woods; cloon, clon, clin, cloony.
• Druim [drum], the back, a ridge or long hill; drum, drom, drim, drum.
• Garran [garraun], a shrubbery; garran, garrane, garraun, garn.
• Gort, a tilled field; gort, gurt, gart.
• Lackagh; a place full of stones or flags
• Ross; in the south generally means a wood; in the north, a peninsula.
• beg - small
• Toor, Tuar, a bleach green or drying place.

Now for Something Unusual 

Previously, we have written about Irish locations and the people who lived in these townlands.  We have not written anything about the goings on and happenings for those people who lived in these locations.  The following information was found on-line and contains information about the residents, some of it a bit unusual.  The following is information we have found regarding the people who lived in Killoscully Civil Parish. 

The Widow Sheedy of Clonalough, Killoscully                       

In 1844 a 'Widow Sheedy' was displaced from her home at Clonalough by an agent of her landlord (Lord Bloomfield).Mrs. Sheedy had (according to the newspaper report) 'long lived' in the house there and at the time of her ejectment she had  three sons, a married daughter and a grandchild living with her. She owed Bloomfield no money (according to the news reports) and had always been honest in her dealing with Bloomfield. (In the Tithe reports we see a Martin Sheedy listed as a Clonalough leaseholder in 1824.) 

A Widow Ryan, whose son is in the lunatic asylum, was also ejected, but her house was spared. We are told that there are two or three farms to be let at this moment on Lord Bloomfield's property but that no one will bid for them because the former tenants had been put out.  (In 1824 we find the following Ryan names in Clonalough Townland – George, Malachy, Michael and James.) 

1889 Basset's Directory 

Basset’s Directory was akin to what we know as a business directory.  It listed residents in a location and their occupation.  Being a rural area one would expect the list to contain agricultural listings.  After the Great Famine many Irish left their homeland for other parts of the world.  It is always interesting to see which names still appear in certain parts of Ireland.

News Items 

• Patrick Humphreys, of Doonane, born 1812, evicted from ancestral home of Doonane, Co. Tipperary, c. 1861, family went to Shower, near Newport, Co. Tipperary. (Bridget Humphreys of Doonane married into the JFK Kennedy tree.  William Humphreys was listed as leaseholder in Doonane around 1824 to 1827.  James and Winifred Humprheys from Doonane were sponsors at our great ancestors’ wedding (James Campbell and Mary Casey). These are interesting observations.)
• The Humphreys are of Welsh ancestry (reflected in the spelling). They probably came over to Ireland in the 12th cent. Norman invasion. Or at least, if they came over in the Plantations or with Cromwell, then they lost their land (and reverted to the old religion) very quickly, for they are found as a tenant-class Catholic family on the Co. Tipperary / Co. Limerick border since at least 1665.

You may find the following map helpful when looking at the tithe records that appear later.  Sometimes it makes it easier to match the list with locations on the map.  One of the major topographical features of Killoscully is Keeper Hill. 

Keeper Hill Mountain

Height: 694 meters  OS 1/50k Mapsheet: 59 for top

Keeper Hill is the highest mountain in the Silvermines area and the 117th highest in Ireland. Keeper Hill is the most northerly summit in the Silvermines area and also the most westerly.

This probably is Farneigh Townland (473 Acres). 

Munniagh (Munnia) Townland 

This is probably Munnia Townland which is 381 acres. 

Clonalough Townland 

Clonalough Townland is 207 acres. 

Drumbaun Townland 

Drumbaun Townland is 251 acres. 

Rossaguile Townland 

Rossaguile Townland is 89 acres. 

Cuntaly Townland 

We don’t know this one.  There is a ‘Controversy’ Townland which contains 72 acres, but we don’t know if Cuntaly and Controversy are one and the same. 

Garran Townland

This is probably an old placename too. 

Garranbeg (Garraunbeg) Townland 

Garraunbeg Townland is 406 acres.
