Adelaide McGonigle
One of the stories that I recall Mom (Ruth Ryan Smith) telling us many years ago, was about how difficult it was to prove that her mother, Adelaide, was ever "born." They had tried getting birth records from Leadville, but these records had been lost, not maintained, or destroyed over time. Recently, I requested baptismal certificates from the Annunciation Church, and this is the response I received:
Good Morning Terry, I received your letter regarding information on your family. I have checked the records here at Annunciation Church and can find a baptismal record for Ann, born 6/24/1884 and baptized 6/29/1884, there was a Bridget, born 2/8/1886, baptized 3/7/1886, and in the death records the only close name is a Neil McGonagle who died 5/23/1899 but whose burial remains are unknown (they presume in the St. Joseph's Cemetery). I am sorry there is so little information. If I can be of further assistance let me know. Kathy |

I knew that grandma Ryan was born in 1886, but couldn't remember the date. So I went back into our records, and sure enough...grandma's birth date was the same as the Bridget McGonigle listed in the baptismal records. Because there were only two McGonigles in Leadville in 1886 (John McGonigle, Frank's unmarried brother, in addition to Frank), my mind began to race...wow!...grandma was baptized as "Bridget" instead of "Adelaide." I called Tim to tell him the news...so I asked him, "do you know what grandma Ryan's baptismal name was?" He said immediately, "Bridget." I then asked, "how did you know?" He told me that Mary Rita provided this information awhile back and was certain that it was somewhere on the website.
Well...I didn't remember seeing it...so I learned something new today as well.
