Our McGonigle and Murrin ancestors lived in Belvidere, Illinois. Obituaries provide more information than just name of deceased and date of death. They also tell us about their lives and people closest to them. We added information on how these people link to our own family line if known. Most are dated after 1920 and never published on our family website.
Stephen McGonigle and Mary Crawford Family Line
Below appear funeral notices for Stephen McGonigle and his wife, Mary Crawford McGonigle.
Below appear two obituaries. One for Stephen’s young daughter in 1897 and his son, Steven McGonigle, in 1955.
Stephen and Mary McGonigle had a daughter named Catharine. Catharine McGonigle married Timothy Kehoe in Belvidere. There was some confusion when the Kehoes were married as the wedding announcement said Carrie McGonigle, not Catharine McGonigle, married Timothy Kehoe.

Francis McGonigle and Catherine Murrin Family Line
Frank and Catherine McGonigle are our ancestors. Both hailed from County Donegal, Ireland, and died in Belvidere, Illinois. Catherine’s obituary appears elsewhere on our website. Below is Frank McGonigle’s obituary as it appeared in the Rockford Morning Star newspaper in Rockford, Illinois (1930).
According to this obituary version, Frank came to Illinois in 1870. Frank’s children are identified above: Caroline McGonigle; Mrs. James (Anna) Tripp; Mrs. Frank (Adelaide) Ryan; and Mrs. A. (Mary) Mulloy.
We found obituaries for some of Frank and Catherine McGonigle’s children. The following obituaries were found in the Rockford newspaper:
Caroline McGonigle - died in April 1955
Mary McGonigle Mulloy - died in December 1925
Anne McGonigle Tripp - obituary not found
James Tripp (Anna’s husband) - died in April 1955
April 24, 1956 Obituary in Rockford Morning Star; Rockford, Illinois. James Tripp’s obituary makes no mention of his wife, Anna, who died earlier. James and Anna Tripp’s daughter, Katherine, married a college professor and moved back East.
The following obituary bridges two family lines: McGonigle and Murrin. Father Mulloy’s parents were Mary McGonigle and Anthony Mulloy. Mary’s first husband was William Tuttle who she married on June 23, 1897. William died in a carnival accident. Mary’s cousin, Anthony Mulloy, was laid up due to a horse riding accident. She was sent off to take care of cousin Tony while he convalesced. Later, Tony and Mary married and had many children. Father Mulloy died in April 1940.
The last two McGonigle obituaries would be people well known to our ancestors, and undoubtedly related to Frank and Catherine’s family.
Murrin Family Line
Anne Murrin, born Anne Hill, died in April 1933. She ties into two sides of our family tree. Anne married Patrick Murrin, who was cousin to our great grandmother, Catherine Murrin McGonigle. Anne’s sister, Elizabeth, married our great grandfather, Bartholomew Ryan, of Kimball, South Dakota. John Murrin was born in 1848 at County Donegal, Ireland. He was probably Catherine Murrin McGonigle’s cousin.
We could not find Mary Murrin Carey’s obituary in the Rockford newspapers, but did find her husband’s obituary.
The following is another Murrin obituary. Edward Murrin’s parents were Patrick Murrin and Ann Hill Murrin. Edward died in March 1939 of a heart ailment. By 1939 only a brother and two sisters survived him.
Michael Bingenheimer married Teresa Murrin. Teresa’s parents were Patrick Murrin and Ann Hill Murrin. Interesting to note that the Murrin and McGonigle family church was St. James in Belvidere, Illinois.
The following obituary is for Robert Bingenheimer, whose parents were Michael Bingenheimer and Teresa Murrin. Teresa’s parents were Patrick Murrin and Anne Hill Murrin. It is possible other Bingenheimer obituaries exist, but these are the only ones found thus far.
