Smyth connection to the McPhillips line occurs in several different ways.  We believe that distantly John Smith may have been related as well.

According to Susan Eberle, this was a very suspicious death, but no investigation was done to determine how he died.  His death occurred in 1916.  See Smyth story above.

Loretta was a daughter of John and Mary Smith, Big Hollow, Wisconsin.  These obituary references are fascinating for several reasons, but most important is that they show how our families tie into each other.

Some of the names above, we saw referenced as out-of-town attendees to Irish John Smith's funeral in Kimball, South Dakota.  We weren't certain if they were relatives or old friends of the family.  Now we have come to realize that they were relatives, and understand their connection with our family from South Dakota.

The following is the story of the Smyths of Big Hollow.  Several obituaries and death notices posted below were extricated from these two pages.  Instead of re-writing the story in computer text, its more interesting to read in its original handwritten context:

Mary was the wife of John Smyth of Big Hollow.  After her husband died of in his wagon, she carried on the responsibilities of the farm.

James with his brother Patrick came to America in 1913, even though his obituary suggests that it was 1915.  See Smyth Journey for more information.

We first reference we had to Peter Smyth was in Irish John Smith's travelogue to Ireland.  Peter's entries appear several times in his journal.

A picture of his grocery store in Madison, along with a short story, appeared on this web almost two years ago.  See Madison.

On your right are historical references to the Weitzel family.  This family connects with the Smiths in several ways:  Joseph J. Weitzel, son of pioneer John Weitzel, married Susan Smyth, daughter of Patrick and Mary Quigley Smyth; and Anthony Weitzel, a son of Joseph and Josephine Weitzel, married Elizabeth McPhillips.  Click to enlarge biographies.
