FAMILY NEWS ITEMS (MITCHELL NEWS)
These are older news articles which appeared in the Mitchell, SD, newspapers. The following are my comments regarding these articles.
1. 1911 News Item about Ryan and McPhillips store in
Kimball. Dated story which may be typical for the time.
2. Adelaide Ryan obituary - Adelaide was born in Leadville, Colorado, in 1896, and married Frank Ryan in Belvidere, Illinois, on November 20, 1917. 3. Frank Ryan obituary - He married Adelaide McGonigle. This obituary we see two children died before he did. They died in childhood. 4. Wedding announcement for Bill Ryan and Mavis Mareska. Jack Ryan was best man and Ruth Ryan was vocal solist during the wedding. 5. Short article mentions the Ryan's dog, Chloe. Chloe was the sweet dog. Her child, Watch, did not care much for kids. 6. Monsignor Brady Honored as first 'Mr. Mitchell'. One of the speakers was Frank Ryan of Kimball. Father Brady appears to have been a friend of the family. 7. CBH Baseball Loop schedule for 1949 - Jack Ryan was secretary 8. Short, humorous news article about Jack Ryan getting old. 9. Mrs. E. Geppert Chosen Kimball Alumni Queen - Jack Ryan was master of ceremonies. The Ryans seem to have done some public speaking and events up in the Dakotas. 9. 8 Students Pledge to Journalism Frat - Of course this mentions Uncle Jack Ryan pledging a fraternity at South Dakota State - Brookings 10. Local firm (Western Chevrolet) hosts picnic. Western Chevrolet was owned by the Verschoor. Other names in attendance was Leo Ryan family and Father Brady. 11. Family Reunion - Leo Ryan family 12. James J. Ryan obituary - placed by his sister, Ethel Verschoor, in Mitchell newspaper. We learn he was a rural school teacher like his brother, Frank. 13. Four Kimball students, including Ruth Ryan, accepted by National High School Poetry Association. Mom's poem was titled "Clouds". 14. Kimball Science Students pick name for their club. It must have been a slow news day. Anyway, Ruth Ryan presented a demonstration on Vinyl Resins. 15. Kimball Girl to Wed in May. We have Ruth Ryan and John Smith's wedding news article. This article announced their engagement. 16. Short article on Living Scholarship winners. Ruth Ryan won $84. 17. Jack Ryan and Christmas 18. Jack Ryan publishing servicemen names and addresses in local paper. 19. Jack Ryan and Irene Hanten wedding article as it appeared in the Mitchell newspaper. 20. Several articles about Bridge games in Kimball. Familiar names are listed. 21. Tarabetz 40th wedding anniversary. Mentions Mrs. james Ryan of Rockford, Illinois. 22. Mary Mines obituary and funeral in Chamberlain. Mary's parents were Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ryan of Smith Township, Brule County, SD. This family lived beside the Boney and Batt Ryan families and had a connection with other Allamakee families. 23. White Lake High Alumni Hold Banquet, Dance - The Hanten sisters (Irene and Anastatia) were in attendance. 24. Wilson Reunion Held at Stickney. Odd ball article about a family with no connection to our own, or at least an unknown one. Neal Ryan of Kimball is listed.
