The Mulloys

The Mary and Tony Mulloy family are also connected to this family in different ways.  Mary (McGonigle) Mulloy was Adelaide McGonigle’s sister and her mother was Catherine Murrin.  Tony Mulloy was also related to the Patrick Murrin, Sr., family.  Mary and Tony Mulloy were also cousins to each other; however, it may have been a distant relationship.  It is safe to say the Ryan and Mulloy families have several “hooks” into this family line.

The King family of Aberdeen is also related to the Murrin family of Belvidere.  You read where Elizabeth Hill’s sister, Ann, married Patrick Murrin.  Elizabeth and Ann had another sister, Margaret.  Margaret’s daughter, Catharine, married Michael Smith, whose parents were “Irish” John and Susan (McPhillips) Smith.  The Kings are descended from Michael and Catharine Smith, and also are connected to the Patrick Murrin (Jr.) family of Belvidere.

The Murrins were originally from the Killybegs area in County Donegal.  When they moved to America is not known; however, we can trace their presence in Boone County and Belvidere from 1860 onward.  In Belvidere the Murrin family lived in an area populated by a large group of Irish.  This area was known as the “Irish Patch”.  The following information shows US census records for 19th century Belvidere, Illinois.

McGonigle/Kehoe Wedding

This wedding caused some confusion, genealogically speaking.  From these two articles it appears the groom, Timothy Kehoe, married two different women.  Carrie McGonigle’s parents were Frank McGonigle and Catherine Murrin..  The true bride was Katherine McGonigle, daughter of Stephen McGonigle.  Carrie undoubtedly got a little ribbing by friends and family for this mix-up.

Mary Rita Ryan Jacobsen

This article includes Mary Rita Ryan’s name as one of the new enlistees during World War II.  This article adds two other bits of interesting information.  First, we know where Mary Rita lived prior to her enlistment.  Second, we learn four of Mary’s brothers were already serving their country.

Two Funerals and a Wedding

Martha Nevin Wed in Victorian Satin Gown Saturday to Francis J. McGonigle
Rockford Morning Star; September 24, 1950

“Mr. and Mrs. Francis Joseph McGonigle will travel to Oakland, Cal., to make their home, following their northern wedding trip.  The former Miss Martha Nevin, daughter of the William R. Nevins, 1810 Oxford st., and the son of the John McGonigles of Oakland, were married yesterday morning at 10:30 o'clock in St. Peter's church before the Rt. Rev. Msgr. William McMillan.

Miss Nevin's Victorian styled wedding gown of ivory satin was fashioned with a standing collar trimmed with Venice point lace and a circular skirt falling into a train.  Her finger-tip veil of ivory illusion caught to a pearl tiara was borrowed from Mrs. B.C. Briggs.  She carried an orchid and stephanotis over a prayer book.”

Several years later tragedy struck this family.  On May 13, 1952, the Rockford Morning Star reported a crash which claimed the life of  Martha Nevin McGonigle and her sister, Anne Nevin.

John McGonigle Car Accident

Incidentally, this is not the first time a McGonigle was involved in a traffic accident which was then reported in the local newspaper.  In June 1949 John McGonigle was injured along with 4 others involved in a two car pile-up.  Fortunately no one was killed in this accident.

Irene’s parents were Stephen McGonigle and Mary Crawford of Belvidere. Illinois.  The following picture appeared in the Rockford Morning Star (May 12, 1921).  The headline reads: “White Clad Members of the Nursing Staff at St. Anthony’s Hospital”.  Irene McGonigle is pictured below.  She is the first person shown in the bottom row when going from left to right.

The Rockford Gazette dated January 14, 1928, reported the following wedding between Irene McGonigle and Charles Kessler.  Irene and her maid of honor, Regina McGonigle, were sisters.

John S. McGonigle Wedding

The Rockford Morning Star reported the following marriage between Geraldine O’Meara and John S. McGonigle of Danvers, California.  John’s father was John J. McGonigle.  The article is dated February 21, 1954; however, I am not certain how this family ties in with our own McGonigle clan.

Finally, one Last Obituary - Mary Crawford McGonigle

Previously we included Mary Crawford McGonigle’s death notice in an earlier write-up, but forgot to include her obituary.  The following article appeared in the Rockford Morning Star dated October 19, 1915.
