Tom Fox wrote Tim the following:

I started with the info on this picture.  I got back  to a census >for 1853 in Wisc.  I forget what county.  I printed it  off...  On the census it says they came from Germany.  John and Catherine Fox both 43  yrs. old.  I also found my Grandfathers' land patents in SDGen.  That was pretty cool.  Seems my Fox ancestors  did a fine job of avoiding military service.  Until my Dad, who was  stationed at the San Francisco PX during WWII.  My grandfather is  second from the right top row...One of my Aunts told me that the Fox's were French. Supposedly my great-great... fought in the Franco-Prussian War was taken prisoner and never returned to France.

Tim provided some additional research assistance, and he found a website that traces Tom's heritage back to Germany/Prussia into the 1600s.  Tom's ancestor was John B. Fox, and was christened as Johann Baptist Fuchs in Wisconsin.  It provided his birth date as 1853 with his date of death being 1924 in Coddington County, South Dakota.  If you'd like to see the Fox ancestry, it can be viewed at the following internet address:
