Merle was Devota Ryan's mother whom many of us met many years ago. As we have mentioned before in this site, there were numerous stories as to what happened to Edward Ryan, her husband. The stories Mom mentioned to us were filled with intrigue...and possibly murder. But as we learned, this was not the case. Edward and Merle "split up" and went separate ways, and I suspect a story was contrived to cover the fact that the family was disgraced by a divorce or separation.

7. 1900 US Census record which shows James and Bridget Ryan family were living in Jefferson Township, Allamakee County, Iowa. (Another James Ryan lived in nearby Jefferson Township) Newspaper clippings can help us trace this family's whereabouts in the latter part of the 19th century and early part of the 20th century.

10. April 1898 news article showing James Ryan selling to parcels of land in Waukon. One parcel was sold to J. B. Ryan. Another parcel was sold to his daughter(?), Mary B. Sheridan.
11. November 1901 news article describing James Ryan's sale of his farm in Jefferson Township. He paid $3000 ten years earlier for the land, and sold his land for $9950. The article says James sold good land.
12. John Ryan family of Kimball celebrated birthday of their daughter, Mary Ann.
13. Seven year old John Verschoor, daughter of Ethel (Ryan) and Jack Verschoor, was hit by a car and broke his leg. This accident happened outside Batt and Liza Ryan's home in Kimball.

15. Two news articles regarding Margaret (Ryan) Ryan's obituaries. These are interesting because they indicate Batt Ryan was her brother. When I first contacted this side of the family, they were not sure if we were related. Like us, they were still investigating their Ryan ancestry. Howeveer, these news articles clearly show Margaret's relationship to our ancestor, Batt Ryan. Earlier we found an obituary for Margaret and it appears on our website. However, it only states she is survived by a brother, but no name is given.
