Wisconsin McCarville Photographs

The Smith and McCarville connections go way back.  Early in the Eighteen Fifties, James McCarville carved out a piece of land in Bear Creek Township, Sauk County, Wisconsin.  Shortly afterward our ancestor, Catharine Greenan Smith, and her brother, Terry Greenan, moved their families to Bear Creek, Wisconsin.

The chart below shows how we believe “Irish” John Smith is related to the McCarville clan.  From “Irish” John Smith’s letter to the U.S. Pension Bureau we know he lived in Brooklyn with his Uncle Terence Greenan and Aunt Alice Greenan McCabe (later Burns) during the Eighteen Fifties. In this same decade, Hugh and Bridget McCarville lived in nearby Williamsburg,             Queens County, New York.  From Bridget McCarville’s death certificate we learn her parents were Bernard and Alice Greenan.  Three of their children – James, Francis, and Hugh – moved to Bear Creek, Wisconsin. Two other children, Terence McCarville and Catherine McCarville Lyons, stayed in New York.  After “Irish” John returned from his trip to Ireland and Scotland he stayed with his cousin, Catherine Lyons, and her family.  They took him around town to see the sights, including Coney Island.  The Wisconsin McCarville family had a close personal connection with “Irish” John’s family in Bear Creek.  In “Irish” John’s obituary Frank McCarville, son of James, was listed first as one of the out of town mourners.  From this close relationship we assume Bridget Greenan was Catherine Greenan Rooney’s sister and ‘Irish’ John Smith’s aunt.

(2) Julia Farley McCarville and her husband, Francis McCarville.  Julia was born December 30, 1870, in Lyons, Wayne County, New York.  She passed away on June 16, 1950.  Francis McCarville was born on May 1, 1862, in Bear Creek Township, Sauk County, Wisconsin.  He passed away in 1948.  They were married on November 27, 1890, in Sauk County, Wisconsin. (3) Francis and Julia Farley McCarville with their grandchildren perhaps.

The McCarville children (left to right):  (1) Genevieve, (2) Rebecca Monica, (3) Bridget Marie "Bessie", (4) Rebecca Frances "Rae", (5) Veronica "Viola", (6) Loretta, (7) Camilla Ann, (8) Marguerite, (9) Bernadine Julia, (10) Mary Vivian, (11) Madeline Ann, (12) Jim.  Two additional children need mentioning.  Mary Georgian was born August 24, 1895, and died September 27, 1895.  Another infant, "Infant Child McCarville" was born and died on April 17, 1907.

 

This is a very early McCarville family photograph.
