McPhillips Family Clones Civil Parish, County Fermanagh
Michael McPhillips married Mary Smyth of Corravilla townland, Aghabog Parish, County Monaghan. One of their children, Susan McPhillips, married “Irish” John Smith in Keyesville, Wisconsin. Mary and Michael lived in Aghabog before moving to America. However, Michael was not born in Aghabog.
We know very little about Michael’s early life. From McPhillips family lore we learn Michael’s father was named Patrick McPhillips. Michael was born in 1824, and from his obituary we learn he was born in Clones Parish, County Fermanagh. Fermanagh is adjacent to and west of County Monaghan where our Smith ancestors lived.
Modern Irish censuses began in 1821; however, very few census records exist prior to 1901. Consequently one must research other records to ‘discover’ nineteenth century ancestors. One such record is known as the Tithe Applotment. This record shows seven McPhillips men living in Clones Civil Parish around 1833. All these McPhillips lived close to Rosslea, which is a village located in County Fermanagh. In fact, all would have attended St. Tierney’s Catholic Church in Rosslea. Rosslea comes from the Irish root ‘Ros Liath’, or grey wood. Later you will see birth and marriage records for McPhillips in Rosslea.
The following information was taken from the “Parliamentary Gazetter of Ireland: Adapted to the New Poor-Law, Franchise, Municipal and Ecclesiastical Arrangements, and Compiled with a Special Reference to the Lines of Railroad and Canal Communication Existing in 1844 – 45”. Printed in 1846.
“Rosslea, or Royslea, a village in the parish of Clones, barony of Clonkelly, co. Fermanagh, Ulster. It stands on the eastern border of the county, on the river Finn, and at the intersection of the road from Clones to Scotstown with that from Smithsborough to Linsaskea, 3 miles west-north-east of Clones, 9 ¼ east by north of Lisnaskea, and 17 est-south-east of Enniskillen. It contains a Roman Catholic chapel, a dispensary, and one or two school-houses. …. The dispensary in the village is within the Clones Poor-law union; and, in 1839-40, it expended £44 12s. 8d., and administered to 1,595 patients. Within about amile of the village are the lakes of Inshinagh, Nart, Crawford, Black, Killyvilly, Lyons, Shankill, Carn, Annashanco, Drumbarrow, Inver, and Drumyarkin, and the residences of Spring-grove, Lakeview, and Lakefield. Area of the village 27 acres. Popl, in 1831, 355; in 1841, 414. Houses 68. Families employed chiefly in agriculture, 21; in manufactures and trade, 44; in other pursuits, Families dependent chiefly on property and professions, 4; on the directing of labour, 45; on their own manual labour. 22: on means not specified. 3.”9.

Is this Patrick McPhillips father to our ancestor, Michael McPhillips? Possible. Patrick and Hugh McPhillips shared a lease in Kincorrah Townland, County Monaghan. They rented land about a mile and half from Rosslea. Rosslea is circled in dark brown on this map. Next to Rosslea we find John McPhillips (Pottiagh) and Hugh McPhillips (Annashanco). If Hugh and Patrick of Kincorragh were connected to Hugh and John McPhillips in Fermanagh, then it is possible Michael may have been born outside of Rosslea. If so, then it is very possible Patrick lived in Fermanagh at one time too.

Pottiagh (or Poteagh) townland is next door to Rosslea. Here we find an entry for John McPhillips leasing land with three other people: Thomas Greydon, J. Connolly and John McCaffrey. He probably did not live in this townland. Later you will see John’s gravestone which states he lived in Annashanco. Annashanco is adjacent to and south of Pottiagh.
