Daniel Ryan, Margaret (Ryan) Ryan & John Ryan.  Margaret's parents were James and Catherine Ryan from Hollyford, Tipperary.
These are photographs of Ellen Ryan, daughter of Daniel and Margaret Ryan of Allamakee (on right).  Daniel Ryan was sort of a Civil War "hero", and initially discarded his connection to our family...until recently.

One of the things we uncovered earlier - that Batt Ryan was a baptismal sponsor to one of Daniel and Margaret's children.  The child he sponsored was Ellen, whose pictures appear above.  While in the holy life, she changed her name to Lydia (or Sister Lydia).

John Ryan.  His obituary, "John was killed in a train wreck that happened between Reed Point and Grey Cliff, Montana.  John is in the picture with Daniel and Margaret.  His mother, Margaret, loved John very much and was heart broken when he died at the age of 18"

 Genealogical Family Line:
  • Daniel Ryan's Sr. Birth (1843-1844) in the Townland of Killeen, civil parish of Kilcomenty, Newport, County Tipperary, Ireland.
  • Death (27 Sept 1895) in Allamakee, Iowa, USA

We had seen references to his birth place in earlier news articles as being Thurles.  Since Thurles is some distance from Newport, we initially discounted a connection to our family.  However, Kilcomenty is where James Ryan (Batt's father) was born, and near the farmlands of the Hill and McDonnell families.  Also, baptismal sponsors tended to be relatives by tradition, so it is likely Daniel & Batt were cousins.

His obituary noted, "he never really recovered from a vaccination shot given to him in the arm at the Andersonville Prison.  He was a POW in the Civil War—serving in the 2nd Battalion, 16th U.S. Infantry.  However, he married and had 11 children and was a successful farmer."  See Daniel Ryan story

 Family Historical Notes - Tim Preece

Daniel Mortimer Ryan came from Killen, a townland outside of Newport. His father was Daniel Mortimer Ryan and mother was Mary Cleeson. Daniel (II) Ryan had eight children, Mary b 1832, Mortimer b 1834, Michael b 1837, Bridget b 1838 d 1929 in Waukon Iowa, Patrick b 1839, Daniel b 1842 d 1895 Waukon Iowa, Thomas b 1844 and John b 1846. Family lore is that they came to U.S through Canada during the Famine and entered through Detroit. Most of the family settled in the Chicago area except Bridget and Daniel who went on to Iowa possibly with their mother Mary Gleeson Ryan.   I would like to find more about the route they took from Ireland through Canada to Chicago and if anyone knows where the father Daniel Mortimer Ryan and Mary Gleeson Ryan died. I found their baptisms in Newport, County Tipperary which listed their Townland of Killeen for Daniel Mortimer and Annaholty for Mary Gleeson Ryan. It also is a Townland just outside Newport.

Mary Gleeson is listed in the Newport Parish Baptismal records is that she was the mother of the baptized children. In those records her home is listed as Annaholty, no doubt the home of her father. Her husband Daniel Mortimer Ryan was from the adjacent townland of Killeen. Both are less than three miles from Newport. ... it was possible that Mary's Gleeson family in Annaholty were members of the parish in Castleconnell, County Limmerick or even Birdhill in County Tipperary. Annaholty as you know is about half-way between both about 2.5 miles each way, but your information confirms that Catholics in Annaholty attended church in Casstleconnell, at least after 1850, and probably before.   ...there was also a Michael Ryan, born 5 March 1837, son of Daniel Mortimer Ryan and Mary Gleeson. Except for his baptismal record from Newport, we have been unable to determine whatever happened to him.

Margaret Ryan Lineage

Margaret Ryan was the daughter of James and Catherine Ryan, originally of Hollyford Tipperary, and neighbors to our family in Union Prairie.  Margaret's brother, Patrick, married a sister of Batt Ryan (also by the name of Margaret).  This family we later see living in Lennox, Iowa.

 Daniel Ryan Obituary:

Friday came word from the Home of Daniel Ryan, about four and a half miles west of town, that he died, and quite suddenly, that afternoon after about two hours sickness with cholera morbus. Only a day or two before we had met him on the street in usual health. He was well known in this section; he was a charter member of John J. Stillman Post, G.A.R. organized in 1883. He enlisted in the 2d Batallion, U.S. Regulars, April 14, '62, at the age of 17, and served his country faithfully as well. He was captured at Buzzard's Roost Ga; and endured the Andersonville hell for thirteen months, and when released by exchange was reduced to 96 lb weight and after thirty-six months service was discharged on account of disabilities thus inflicted. The funeral was held at the Catholic Church Sunday a.m., the G.A.R. turning out in force to honor a
departed comrade, and his remains were deposited in the Catholic cemetery, northwest of town. The funeral discourse by Father Walsh was an excellent one.
