St. Mary's Cemetery Inscriptions
Aghabog Civil Parish, Latnamard
County Monaghan
Introduction
By now you know “Irish” John Smith and Susan McPhillips lived in County Monaghan. Both lived in Aghabog Civil Parish. Since the Reformation of the sixteenth century there have been two separate parish structures in Ireland – Civil and Roman Catholic. In this case, Aghabog Civil Parish refers to an administrative unit. Another administrative unit is the townland. A townland is the smallest administrative unit in Ireland, but it does not mean it is a town. There are roughly 64,000 townlands in Ireland. A townland could be several thousands of acres or a single acre. In rural areas people identified closely with their townland, and this was the address used in many records. Even in this document you will see an Irish name listed with a townland.
Our ancestors attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Latnamard townland, which is located near the village of Smithboro. Many Smith, Smyth, McPhillips and Greenan parishioners lay buried in the old cemetery next to the church. We uncovered almost 400 monuments containing cemetery inscriptions. This number represents only a portion of the Irish bones buried here. Remember, many Irish were poor and could not afford a monument to honor their loved ones. Consequently, many graves remain unknown or adorned with simple markers.
St. Mary's church was built in what was then Aghabog Roman Catholic Parish. Later Aghabog Parish merged with Killeevan Parish to the north. Lewis's Topographic Dictionary of 1837 describes St. Mary’s church as follows: "The Roman Catholic parish forms part of the union of Killeevan. The Roman Catholic chapel is a neat modern building situated on the townland of Lathnamard." The church itself was founded in either 1812 or 1813. Catholic churches during this time were known only as chapels and it appears the term ‘church’ was designated for Church of Ireland buildings. Quakers and Presbyterians worshipped in meetinghouses.
Church records do exist for this parish but the earliest ones remaining begin in 1840. What do these old records tell us? First, they tell us how important the Church was to these poor Irish in this land. Second, it tells us a history of families who lived and died in this area. A picture of this church appears below.
County Monaghan
County Monaghan in Gaelic is known as ‘Muineachain’ or ‘Place of thickets’. Located in the province of Ulster this County was known for its agriculture, primarily flax. Monaghan is a county of lakes, gentle hills, farmhouses and market towns. Monaghan also is home to several Bronze Age megalithic sites and prehistoric remains. Monaghan is often described as the county of the little hills. These hills are called drumlins and were formed by melting glaciers. The word ‘drum’ appears in many townland names and refers to hills or hillocks.
It comprises an area, according to the Ordnance surveys of 327,048 statute acres, of which 9236 are unimproved mountain and bog, 6167 are under water, and the rest are cultivated land. The population in 1821, amounted to 174,697, and in 1831 the population had jumped to 195,536. Its greatest length southeast by northwest is nearly 40 miles, and its width southwest by east is about 22 miles.
Smith Family Tree
The following shows what we know about our family tree. 'Irish' John Smith married Susan McPhillips in 1874 at Keyesville, Wisconsin. Susan's parents were Michael McPhillips and Mary Smythe, both from County Monaghan. We have also seen Mary Smythe written as Mary Smith. Michael’s father was Patrick McPhillips. Susan claimed to have been born in Corravilla townland, while ‘Irish’ John Smith said he lived in the neighboring townland of Rossnaglogh East.
Family Tales
Looking at these records reminds me of our own family stories. As youngsters we believed every word we heard from adults. Old family stories took on a life of their own and fertilized young imaginations. In our adolescence and young adulthood these ‘stories’ could not pass the truth test. However, there may have been a hint of truth in these old stories after all. One story stuck with me all these years.
This tale was told by Pete Smith to our father when he was a young lad. This story is known to all Smiths in our family line. We were once known as McGowan and not Smiths. A long time ago one of our ancestors shot a British Captain (Major or General depending on the number of drinks the story teller had) and killed him. He hid in the Irish bogs for almost two years evading British authorities as he had a price on his head. This ancestor had a good friend by the name of ‘Johnnie John Smyth' and he used this name to sneak passage aboard ship heading to America. For fear of being caught this ancestor never used his original surname of 'McGowan', and 'Americanized' the spelling of 'Smyth' to 'Smith'. That is the story of how we became Smiths.
Cemetery Records
What do we learn from these records? We discover our original surname may actually be ‘Smyth’ after all. ‘Irish’ John came from Rossnalglogh East. A cluster of Smith surnames appear in adjacent townlands of Rossnaglogh East, Faltagh and Corravilla. This is according to the Griffith Valuation Survey taken between 1847 and 1864. The cemetery records show the surnames of those who lived in these townlands to be ‘Smyth’ and not ‘Smith’. We find another interesting fact in another monument. Our McPhillips clan lived in the adjacent townlands of Corravilla and Tonagh and they too clustered together in a group. A cemetery monument was erected in 1824 by one Patrick McPhillips of Tonagh in honor of his father who had recently died. This information would make our family tree look like the following:

That would push the McPhillips line of our family back to circa 1760 AD. Unfortunately, I have not been able to determine who their wives were, but suspect they too are buried beside their husbands in this rural cemetery. What you will see next is the most complete listing found online for St. Mary’s cemetery. Every name whose name is inscribed on a monument is included in this cemetery report. Sometimes people with dissimilar names are lumped together in the list below. This indicates a family plot. One other thing you will notice is that many gravestone markers also indicate the location where the deceased lived.
The following map shows where the ‘Smyth’ family lived in County Monaghan. Incidentally, the McPhillips clan be found living in the same area as the Smyth family. Please note the townland names as you will see them listed later in the cemetery listings. Also, the green line marks the demarcation between Kilmore Civil Parish and Aghabog Civil Parish. You may ask why we included all cemetery inscriptions we could find in this report. Other names you see may also be distant relatives. We just don’t know enough yet to determine the makeup of our family line.

Certain names are highlighted below for easier reading. In some cases we have added an ‘editor note’ if we felt additional information was required. We tried to correct the townland name when applicable as we know some of you are doing family research. This information was originally compiled in 1982 so you will not see cemetery inscriptions for later dates.

By the Ancient Order of Hibernians and friends of the late brother Francis J McPHILLIPS shot on March 09, 1921 age 19 (editor’s note: The Anglo-Irish War, also known as the Irish War of Independence, was a guerilla campaign mounted against the British Government in Ireland by the Irish Republican Army under the legitimacy of the First Dail, the extra-legal Irish parliament created in 1918 by a majority of Irish MPs. It lasted from January 1919 until the truce in July 1921. Possibly Francis was a casualty of this war. The only reference to a Francis J. McPhillips I could find was listed in the New York Police Departments Personnel Records dated January 12, 1921 – bade number 10275.)
