Kilcomenty Civil Parish 1840 Griffiths Map

A lot of genealogical and census information has been provided over the past few months, and this page is provided to "tie everything together".   The census information references "town lands", and these maps show town land boundaries for Kilcomenty and Killoscully (below).

Most Irish census information has been lost or destroyed, so the most important still remaining are the Griffiths Surveys, Tithe Tax Rolls (Church of England tax on all residents), and religious Census Records (Papist Surveys).

1659    -  Civil & Down Surveys (Cromwell)

1766    -   Religious Census (Papist Surveys)

1827    -   Tithe Tax

1845    -   Griffiths Surveys (references begin at bottom of page)

Summary of Civil Parishes and relevance to the Ryan family heritage:

Kilnarath Civil Parish.   Home of James and Annie Ryan, as noted by the Catholic Church records.  Their children's baptismal records note "Gortnaskehy" town land as their place of residence.  Gortnaskehy is within Kilnarath Civil Parish, which is directly south of Killoscully Civil Parish and west of Fiddane, another town land in Kilnarath.

Kilcomenty Civil Parish.  The Catholic Church records show that James Ryan was born at Bird Hill, which is located on the eastern boundaries of this Parish.  Between Newport and Bird Hill, there are a number of gentlemen's homes, notably Protestants, which reflects the civility of Tipperary's eastern boundaries.

Killoscully Civil Parish.  This was always considered a wilderness, and throughout much of Irish history, was considered dangerous for many outsiders to travel its interiors.  As time progressed, English law and Protestant ownership of land, changed the lawlessness of this territory to one where families could raise their families with some degree of peace.  In this territory, we see the Hill and McDonald families.  We also see the Casey and Campbell families around Doonane, another small town in Killsocully Civil Parish.  Gortanaskehy town land, in Kilnarath, bordered Doonane's southern borders.

While there was no school within easy walking distance, our ancestors most likely attended the same church at Curraghduff. which was centrally located for Fiddane, Gortnaskehy, Guaranbeg and Doonane residents.
