"Irish" John Smith Has Passed ON

It was a decided shock to this community when the news came to town early Friday evening of the death of John Smith. He had been about town in his usual good spirits but a few days before. Taken suddenly ill Thursday with an attack of the influenza, his age (87) and weakened condition from a long and serious illness with pneumonia last March, when at times his life was despaired of, was too much for him to overcome and the angel of death removed one of the most widely known and loved pioneers of Brule County.

Funeral services were held at the Catholic church Monday forenoon, and the beautiful church which the dead member had done so much to promote was filled to it capacity. It is doubtful if ever there was a funeral service in Kimball attended by so many from out of the town and county. They came from far and near - old friends and acquaintances - to pay by their presence tribute to one of the finest of men they had ever known. More than 100 automobiles filled with friends and acquaintances followed the hearse and mourners to the cemetery. Father O'Gorman was assisted in the services by Father Saner of Minneapolis, Father Normoyle of Cannon Falls, Minn., and Father Rowan of Platte.

At the conclusion of the Catholic services, Father O'Gorman, standing at the head of the grey coffin draped with the American flay, said that a sermon was no part of the Catholic ritual for the dead, but should he fail to pay even a modest tribute to John Smith the very bricks in the church would cry out in protest: that the ground over which his body rested was one of his many gifts to the church he so greatly loved and which he did so much to promote. He spoke of Death and how the departed and every good Catholic prepared for it how Mr. Smith lived up to the teaching of the church and his ready ????? every need of it. The eloquent priest held up the home life of the dead man as a model for every family in the county; what a beautiful state of affairs it would be today if even but one-half the families in the state lived up to their duties to God and State as they are lived up to in ????? to God What ????? to the state what belonged to the state. A citizen we all loved to know and loved to trust. His word was his bond.

There were so many out of town people attending the services that it is impossible to mention names. Those from out of the state were Frank McCarville, Arthur McClusky and John G. Sullivan of Lone Rock, Wisc., Genevieve McPhillips and Mrs. Rose Love of Spring Green, James Smith, Sam Farrell, P. J. Smith, Mrs. Mary Benton and Mrs. Will Coyle of Madison, all of Wisconsin. Mrs. Benton was Mrs. Smith's bridesmaid when she was married in 1874.

John Smith was born in County Monaghan, Ireland, March 3, 1841. He came to the United States with his parents four years later and they located in Brooklyn. When he was about 12 years of age, the family removed to Wisconsin. When but 15 years of age he enlisted with the Wisconsin 29th Infantry and served throughout the civil war. He was severely wounded at the battle of Champion Hill. He was married to Susan McPhillips at Keyesville, Wis., April 14, 1875. In 1882 Mr. Smith came to Brule County and filed on a claim, bringing his family here in 1883. He was a father of 12 children. Two died years ago. The surviving children left to comfort the widow are Mike, John, Frank, Mrs. L. A. Miller, Mrs. Mayme Carroll and Kittie of Kimball, Will of Stickney, Mrs. Harry Byrne of Montrose, Mrs. Elizabeth Willrodt of Ola and Peter, the last named the only one of the ten children not present at the death of their father, he was unable to get here from the far South.

Mr. Smith was affectionately known and called "Irish" John to distinguish him from the many John Smiths. He lived up to his ancestry in every respect - an honest, industrious, christen Irishman, a credit to his race.

Obit - March 21, 1939

Mrs. John Smith, Pioneer Resident, Passes Tuesday

Mrs. John Smith, a pioneer resident of this community since 1883, died at her home south of Kimball shortly before noon, Tuesday, March 21, 1939. She had been in frail health for several years past and had been seriously ill with pneumonia prior to her death.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 o'clock this morning, Thursday, at St. Margaret's church in Kimball and burial was in the church cemetery beside her husband. Pallbearers were her five sons and her brother, Owen McPhillips. Solemn requiem mass was said by Father F. J. O'Gorman, assisted by Father Leo Hussman of Centerville and Father J. J. Rowan of White Lake.

Susan McPhillips was born in County Monaghan, Ireland, September 2, 1857. When she was ten years old she came to the United States with her parents and the family settled in Wisconsin. On April 14, 1874, at Keyesville, Wisconsin, she was united in marriage to John Smith, who had also come to America from County Monaghan, Ireland.

In 1882, Mr. Smith came to Brule county to homestead and in 1883 the family came here and this has since been their home. During their long residence here the Smith family prospered and built one of the finest farm homes and farming units in this part of the country. "Irish" John Smith, the father was called by those who knew him best, because he was Irish "Through and through." Mrs. Smith was equally well esteemed and beloved to all who knew her and together they raised on of the finest families in the county.

Their home life was closely knit and from babyhood the sons and daughters were trained to have the deepest respect and love fro their parents, as well as for their religious faith. Theirs was a home in which family ties burned brightly throughout all the years and which ?????.

After the father's death September 5, 1928, Mrs. Smith was left to the loving care of both sons and daughters. Her every wish, as often anticipated as it was expressed, was met with unselfishness on the part of her children. A wonderful mother and homemaker has passed on after living a full, rich life - leaving a heritage that might well be the envy of others.

Thirteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, three of whom died in infancy. Surviving are Peter, Mike, John, Frank, Mayme and Kittie, all of Kimball; Mrs. L. A. Miller of Chamberlain; W. P. Smith of Stickney; Mrs. J. H. Byrne of Mitchell; and Mrs. H. B. Willrodt of Omaha; also one brother, Owen McPhillips, of Kimball.

May neighbors and friends of the family gathered today to pay their last respects to Mrs. Smith and Father J. J. O'Gorman, her spiritual counselor for so many years, paid high tribute to her memory. Out of town relatives and friends presents were Mrs. Henry Ellifson, Spring Green, Wisc.; Genevieve McPhillips, Hill Point, Wisc.; Mrs. George McPhillips, St. Paul, Minn.; Mrs. Will Coyle, Madison, Wisc.; all nieces of Mrs. Smith; also Dr. M. J. May and Fred Brown, Rapid City; Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Lally, Montrose, S. D.; Mrs. James Keiper, Mitchell, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Delire, Platte, S. D.
