As we continue to learn more about our families, we begin to see how the Union Prairie "neighborhood" in Iowa fits with our family tree. The top group of boxes reflect the collection of Ryan farms. There farms were about 3-4 miles west of Waukon, Iowa. The group of boxes at the bottom are two families that are also associated with the Ryan: Bart Campbell (brother to Ann Campbell Ryan, wife of James Sr.) and James Kennedy (great ancestor of the King and Black families)
Biff King recently wrote about how his family connects to both the Smith and Ryan families. The King family connection is through the Hill family, as their great ancestor was Margaret, a sister to Elizabeth Hill:
Margaret was the sister of your great-grandmother Eliza! Margaret Hill married James Kennedy who was a local pharmacist and was born in Boston . James Kennedy and Margaret Hill had one child, our grandmother Catherine Kennedy. James Kennedy died of an asthma attack at age 42 and Margaret then married John Fitzgerald. Our grand-mother Catherine Kennedy, said she moved out to Kimball( From Waukon Iowa-Allamakee County) to teach because Kimball is where her aunt Eliza, Uncle and cousins, the Ryan's, lived!
The census below shows that the Kennedy family were one of the earliest families to reside in Allamakee County, at least seven years earlier than the James Ryan family. In a few weeks, we will provide additional information to explain their presence in the County.
