Bridget Smith
Our Scottish Cousin
Immigration Documents
Introduction
Who is Bridget Smith? In 1908 Irish John and Susan Smith visited relatives in Scotland. Irish John and Susan would have seen and talked to Bridget while in Scotland. How is this family related to us? Her relationship to us is through Susan McPhillip Smith (John Smith's wife) mother, Mary Smyth..
There are a minimum of three different ways this family ties into our own. Bridget Smith’s great-grandparents were John Smith, Susan (Coyle) Smith, Patrick Greenan, and Margaret (McCarval) Greenan. All came from County Monaghan. Susan McPhillips’ mother was born Mary Smith. Irish John’s mother was born ‘Catherine Greenan’. Of course, Irish John could be cousin to Bridget through the Smith line.
Smith Family
In 1908 Irish John visited this family in Scotland. Within a couple of years members of this family began to move out of Scotland to America. We have immigration records for four of the five who made the trip overseas: Bridget Smith, Louisa Smith, Patrick Smith Sr., and Thomas Smith. We do not have immigration records for Patrick Smith Jr., and he is the person who lived with the Irish John Smith family in the early part of the twentieth century. We continue to search for Patrick Junior’s immigration documents.
Of these five who made the trip, only one went back to Scotland. Patrick Sr. did not stay in Wisconsin, but went back home to Scotland. Louisa, his wife, stayed with her children in America. Several of Louisa and Patrick’s children did not make the trip to Wisconsin.

This list does not show the full passenger list. It only shows those people who were entered into the immigration records at Ellis Island. Some of these people listed appear to be residents of America, so it is not clear why they had their name entered in the records.
