The name ‘Couture’ finds its origin in medieval France. In French, a ‘costure’ is a plowed field, a cultivated and sown ground. Guillaume Couture was one of the earliest colonists of New France. He was son of Guillaume Couture and Madeleine Malet of the Saint-Godard parish of Rouen in Normandy. Guillaume Jr. was born on January 14, 1618. By 1638 Guillaume was already at the height Sainte Marie of Lake Huron when he was only 20 years old. He was under contract with the Jesuits working for food and lodging. Guillaume Couture learned several Indian dialects and worked as a carpenter in the colony. While evangelizing the Huron, he was captured along with two Jesuit priests. One of the priests was killed with a blow of an axe by the Indians within a month after their capture. The priest was killed for making the sign of the cross on the forehead of an Indian child.
Couture was tortured by the Indians. They tore off his fingernails, crushed his fingers with their teeth, passed a sword through his hand, and tried to cut him with a piece of a shell. One cut exposed a nerve and the arm swelled to the elbow. Eventually Couture was adopted by the tribe. Several years passed and the French rescued Guillaume. From that time on he was called on as an ambassador to the Indian tribes since he had learned their dialects. For his service to the Crown he was awarded land and money from the King.
