The Census of 1659

Poll Tax

County Donegal

 Introduction

This is possibly the most valuable document for this period, giving access to a Country wide index of major inhabitants and distribution of population. This is the only known Country wide Census earlier than 1821. It is divided by County, barony, parish and Townland. For an area it gives the number of English, Irish and Scottish. It also shows the names and occupation of some of the more prominent people in an area known as "Titulado". Also of great value is an index of the most popular names in a barony which can be of great use in locating Ancestor with a sufficiently unusual surname.  This is sometimes known as ‘Pender’s Census’ after the person who edited this information in 1939.

This tax was organized for the collection of money to run the Army.  It lists a large number of people appointed as official collectors by County.

The following shows the number of surnames entered for each parish.  These indicate the head of household and do not include other family members.  Unfortunately, nothing exists of this survey to show where these people lived.  O’Conaghan and O’Conighan are other early variations for McGonigle in this barony, especially in southern Donegal.  Eleven families with these surnames appear on this list.  Below I added a listing that shows where the great families could be found clustered in this part of Donegal.  Killybegs is located in the Barony of Banagh.

Will we see McGonigle or Murrin in these census results?  No.  In Inishowen Baron the surname ‘McGonigle’ appears as ‘O Conagill’.  In the Barony of  Boylagh and Banagh McGonigle appears as either ‘O Conighan’ or ‘O Conighan’.  Killybegs is located in the latter barony.  Where were the Murrins?  The census only showed the principal names found in each Barony.  The census does not list all surnames found in each area.  Either this family had not moved to County Donegal yet or they lived in Donegal but not in any great number.

County Donegal

Dún na nGall is Irish for "fort of the foreigner," so called from having repelled the numerous Viking raids on the County in the 8th and 9th centuries.  We left the misspellings found in the original document.

Hearth Money Rolls 1663 and 1665

See the document titled “McGonigle and Allied Families” already posted on our website for names found on the Hearth Money Rolls. We still did not find the surname Murrin, but did find a number of people listed with a variant for McGonigle.
