Related to the story around the Mulloys, there are references to Frank and Ann McGonigle.  See McGonigle Photos to view some historical photos and documents.

The Mulloy family tree.  Bernard Mulloy married Shirley Anne Morrison and had 16 children.  Tim wrote that they must have been a "good Catholic family"...interestingly enough, the Mulloys lived in the old priest's home which was located across the street from the Catholic Church.  It was probably one of the few homes in the area to house his large family.

I also couldn't resist sending you two photos.

(LEFT)  The first is Grandpa Mulloy with his father Anthony Mulloy and his brother Anthony Mulloy Jr. (Frenchie).  Bernard is the one in the hat.

(BELOW)  The second is Mary McGonigle Mulloy and Grandpa Mulloy as an adorable toddler.  Mary Mulloy looked like a really nice woman - too bad she died so young. (1877 - 1925 )

McGonigle Lore

Bernie Mulloy, Bethany's grandpa, remembers hearing about Francis and Catherine McGonigle moving to Colorado .  Apparently, Francis was 'grub-staking'.  I had to look up the term.  This means he was lending money and supplies to miners for a share in their strike.

Bethany also mentioned that Fred Schulz appeared on several census records living with the McGonigle family.  She asked Grandpa Bernard Mulloy about him.  According to him, Fred Schulz was a live-in buddy of Frank McGonigle.  They played cribbage and fished the Wabash River together.  You don't see much of this today, but was probably common back in the old days.  Part of their McGonigle family lore involves an avalanche in Leadville.  .  As handed down in their family, the McGonigles moved back to Belvidere after a landslide wiped out Leadville .  See Ancestral Photos for picture of Fred Schultz with Frank McGonigle, along with Mary Rita note.

Bethany was not sure how many grandchildren got money after Frank died; however, her grandpa Bernard received some money which he used to go get an Engineering degree in college.

The Mulloy Family history, as noted by Bethany Klus

  • Grandpa Bernard Mulloy's parents were Anthony Mulloy and Mary McGonigle. As you guys have noted on your website, Mary was originally married to a William Tuttle who died on a carnival ride.  I don't think William's family was very friendly towards Mary after the divorce because Grandpa Mulloy doesn't know anything about them and in fact thought his older sister Helen (actually his half sister) was a full sister until he was a teenager.
  • The story of how Anthony and Mary got married is an interesting one. According to Grandpa Mulloy, Anthony, called Tony, was a professional jockey, possibly at a racetrack in Rockford Illinois  which was 14 miles away from Belvidere.  Tony was thrown by the racehorse, Crazy Jane and broke his leg.  This effectively ended his career as a jockey.  While he was recuperating his 4th cousin (I think she might actually be his 2nd or 3rd) Mary McGonigle came to his home and helped nurse him back to health (where her daughter Helen was at this time, I don't know).  Tony and Mary eventually married.  After Tony's leg mended he worked at Morgan and Wright Rubber Company in Chicago.  Shortly before WWI, Morgan and Wright moved to Detroit and Tony and Mary moved with them.

So how exactly are Anthony Mulloy and Mary McGonigle related?  I'm still not sure.  Anthony's mother was Mary Murrin, who is the sister of Patrick Murrin who is the husband of your Ann Hill Murrin.  Patrick and Mary's parents are Patrick Murrin and Margaret Meehan, who are both also buried in St. James Cemetery (her death certificate actually says P. Murrin and Madge Meehan, but Patrick Murrin Jr. and Ann Hill Murrin are living with Patrick Murrin and Margaret Murrin in the 1880 census and they are buried together in the St. James Cemetery so I think I have them right).  There are also rumors that Mary Murrin was born in Killybegs, Donegal County, Ireland  as well.  Mary McGonigle's parents, as you know, were Catherine Murrin and Francis McGonigle.  Catherine Murrin's parents were James Murrin and Bridget McCloskey.
