Coyle Family

Smith Family Genealogy

County Monaghan, Ireland

Introduction

Way back in our Smith family tree resides the Coyle family of County Monaghan, Ireland.  Today this is how we see our family tree:

Susan Coyle was Irish John Smith’s grandmother.  In the late eighteenth century (1796) we see two John Smiths living in Aghabog Civil Parish, County Monaghan.  The Coyle surname is common in this part of Ireland.

We examine each townland where Coyle surnames are found.  Townlands are an administrative unit and can be as small as an acre or several thousand acres.  For some townlands below we also added a list of all leaseholders.  There are several reasons for doing this.  First, it gives you an idea of how many tenants could be squeezed into small parcels of land in Ireland.  Second, as we continue to search our ancestry we may discover some of these names too are actually distant relatives.  It appears that the greatest concentration of Coyle surnames was located in Drumsnat Civil Parish, which abuts and found north of Aghabog Civil Parish.

County Monaghan Map

For reference we include a map showing the Civil Parishes for County Monaghan as they existed in the mid-nineteenth century.  Civil Parishes are old administrative units, perhaps dating as far back as medieval times.

Civil Parishes can be seen in the map above.  They include: (1) Aghabog; (2) Aghnamullen; (3) Ballybay; (4) Clones; (5) Clontibret; (6) Currin; (7) Donagh; (8) Donaghmoyne; (9) Drummully; (10) Drumsnat; (11) Ematris; (12) Errigal Trough; (13) Inishkeen; (14) Killanny; (15) Killeevan; (16) Kilmore; (17) Magheracloone; (18) Magheross; (19) Monaghan; (20) Muckno; (21) Tedavnet; (22) Tehallan; and (23) Tullycorbet.

Aghabog Civil Parish

Rossnaglogh East Townland

Our first stop is Rossnaglogh East, Aghabog Civil Parish, County Monaghan.  The Griffith Valuation shows a Patrick Coyle living in the townland of Rossnaglogh East.  This valuation was done between 1847 and 1864.  This is the same townland that Irish John Smith said he lived in prior to coming to America.  In fact, we see an entry for ‘John Smith’ in this same Valuation of Tenements, but this is not Irish John.  Two other names are of interest appear and they are Denis McPhillips and Patrick McPhillips.  Dennis and Patrick leased land in neighboring Corravilla townland too.  Corravilla was where Irish John Smith’s wife, Susan McPhillips, was born and lived.
