The previous census record does show a record for our relatives; however, several questions still remain unanswered. First, where is Owen? He died in 1882. Second, the census record shows Catherine Smith’s age as ‘20’. Actually, her age was ‘30’. Was this person Bridget’s daughter or daughter-in-law? Unfortunately, we only had access to 1881 transcribed records and not original documents.

This record looks odd but it was issued for Thomas Smith’s birth. In the margins is written: “Alteration of ‘???’ record. See Reg of Cor. Entr. Vol 2 / 31 August 7 1883”. There is a signature at the margin. Someone must have noticed an error in the original record and made the correction later. We have not seen the corrected document; however, the index for Thomas Smith’s birth hones in on the above record. Other than the date, this record matches information we had regarding Thomas Smith’s birth.

How are We Related to this Smith Family?

What do we know? From an early family writing by Elizabeth Wilrodt we know Irish John visited his Scottish relatives. This happened sometime mid-year 1908. We believe Irish John’s father, Peter, and Owen Smith may have been brothers. We know this family had a connection to Aghabog Civil Parish, which is where Irish John lived before moving to America.

The Irish generally followed the ‘Irish Naming Convention’ when naming children. It follows this pattern:

First son named for Father's father.
Second son named for Mother's father

Third son named for Father.
Fourth son named for Father's eldest brother.

First daughter named for Mother's mother.
Second daughter named for Father's mother.
Third daughter named for Mother.
Fourth daughter named for Mother's eldest sister
Second wife's oldest daughter named for the first wife

Irish John and Susan used this naming convention in naming their children. Was this always followed? No. Even Irish John and Susan created a variation:

First Son: Peter (named after Irish John’s father, Peter Smith)

Second Son: Michael (named after Susan’s father, Michael McPhillips)

Third Son: William (we believe named after Irish John’s step-father, William Rooney) <- This is the variation

First Daughter: Mary (named after Susan’s mother, Mary McPhillips)

Second Daughter: Catherine (named after Irish John’s mother, Catherine Smith-Rooney)

In Owen and Bridget Smith’s case the children were named as follows:

1. Peter Smith (oldest son) <- (this is a variation of the naming convention)

2. John Smith (second oldest son named after Owen’s father, John Smith)

3. Patrick Smith (third oldest son named after Bridget’s father, Patrick Greenan)

4. Margaret Smith (oldest daughter, named after Bridget’s mother, Margaret Greenan)

5. Susan Smith (second oldest daughter, named after Owen’s mother, Susan Smith)

Our great-great grandparents, Peter and Catharine Smith, had the following known children:

1. Bridget Smith

2. John Smith

3. Owen Smith

This is the problem with relying solely on the naming convention. It does not take into account deaths of children. In those cases one might find that parents would name a later child after the dead child.

Another possibility is through the Greenan family. Owen’s wife was born Bridget Greenan. Irish John’s mother was born Catharine Greenan. It might be possible that our family is related to this Scottish family through the Greenan family line. We have seen examples where the Irish males in our family married sisters. Perhaps this is another example too.

Frank Smith once said that the name ‘John’ has gone back for centuries in the Smith family. As written before, we believe Owen and Peter Smith were brothers. Consequently, this is how we believe our family tree looks like now.
