I have been doing research on my Czech ancestors from Johnson County,
Iowa and got much of this information from a recent trip to the Johnson
County Courthouse and a Bistricky
family reunion in Swisher, Iowa. I have the following
information about my ancestory, Jann Bistricky:
Jann Bistricky (also spelled Bystricky) was born about 1809 in Bohemia
and died in Johnson county, Iowa on
October 20, 1896 at
the age of 87. Jann, who was also known as John,was married five times.
The first marriage was in Bohemia and produced a daughter, Anna
who was born about 1843. Jann's wife must have died because he married
again.
The second marriage was in 1852 in Bohemia to a widow, Maria
Skrabel. Maria had 4 children by her first husband, Wenzel Skrabel, who
died in 1851 in Sosina, District of Blovic, Bohemia. These children were
Barbara, Maria, Albert and Catharina. Barbara was born about 1841, Maria
was born about 1843, Albert was born about 1846 and Catharina was born
in 1848. These children are often seen in the census and in other
documents using the last name of Bistricky. Jann and Maria had 4
children together. Johanna and Johan were born about 1852 and 1854 in
Bohemia. They also had (at least) two in
Iowa, Catharina
about 1858 and Mary about 1860.
Jann immigrated with his new wife, Maria (Skrabel) Bistricky and
their blended family on the ship
HOHENSTAUFEN in
December of 1854. They settled in Johnson County, Iowa. He was
naturalized Oct 13, 1863.
In 1855, their daughter Catharina Skrabel died at the age of 7. They
must have named their next daughter, Catharina Bistricky after her. In
1858 Jann adopted Maria's children, Barbara and Maria. Nothing is
mentioned about Albert being adopted. In 1860, Maria (Skrabel) Bistricky
died.
Jann's third marriage was to Anna Splical in 1861 -1862. They had
3 children, Emma, William and Lizzie. Anna died about 1866.
Jann's fourth marriage was to Anna Horak on
January 16, 1868.
The birth certificates
of their children list her maiden name as Anna Perina. Anna must have
first been married to a Horak. John Bistricky and Anna Horak Perina had
two children, Joseph (my great grandfather) and Addie, also known as
Hattie. Anna died in 1872. Note: There was an Anna Horak who emmigrated,
arriving at Castle Garden on May 13, 1867. This Anna was 33 and arrived
with 4 children, Anton, Josef, Anna and Wenzel. Another researcher told
me a family story of an Annie Horak who immigrated from Bohemia and
people on the ship got the plague. Her father, Wenzel and a brother both
died. This little Anna Horak ended up living with the Swisher family of
Swisher, Iowa. The Anna Horak who was the wife of John Bistricky may
have been the mother of this Anna.
Jann's fifth and final wife was Rozarie. Rozarie's previous name
may have been Youransic as he was found living with a stepson, John
Youransic in 1880. They had three more children, Mary, Frank and
Charles. Jann died Oct 20, 1896 and Rozarie died July 6 1898. They are
both buried in Babcock Cemetery (old Greencastle Cemetery) near North
Liberty, Johnson county, Iowa.
Jann's daughter by his first wife, Anna Bistricky married a Vincent
"Joe" Petsel. Of Maria's children by Wenzel, Barbara Skrabel married a
Peter Delire and Maria Skrabel married a McElroy. It is unknown what
happened to Albert Skrabel. Of Jann and Maria's daughters, Catharina
married John Parizek and Mary married Joseph Krehlik. Of Jann and Anna
Splical's children, Emma had a love affair and became pregnant and
drowned herself, William died of
diphtheria and Lizzie married a Vincent "Joe" Kral. Of Jann and
Anna Horak Perina's children, Joseph married Katie Vecerka and Hattie
married Frank Smykil. Jann and Rozarie's children, Mary, Frank and
Charles all died as children, probably all of diphtheria.
