Cootehill Poor Law Union
Smyth, McPhillips and Greenan Families
CENSUS HISTORY PART 2:
The modern Irish census records began early in the 19th century. Many records were intentionally destroyed while other records burned in a 1921 Dublin fire. Only a few 19th century records still exist. Therefore, the only existing records essentially start from 1901 forward.
This poses huge problems for genealogists who try connecting their families in Ireland. Several census substitutes exist which prove helpful. One of these ‘census substitutes’ come down to us for the Irish Poor Law Unions. Cootehill Poor Law Union covered an area which included Aghabog, where our Smyth and McPhillips families lived. It also covered Ematris Parish where our Greenan cousins lived.
This documents includes all the names of renters listed in an 1839 Cootehill Poor Law Union document. Obviously, this list does not include all renters; rather, we suspect this list only shows the larger land and leaseholders found living in this area.
We found the following information from this 1839 record. “Irish” John Smith was born in Rossnaglogh town land. John’s sister, Bridget, was born in 1839. We believe “Irish” John Smith’s father was named Peter. This is according to John’s death certificate. “Irish” John’s mom was born Catharine Greenan. Catharine’s obituary says her husband was named John Smith but that may be incorrect. We believe ‘John Smith’ listed below is “Irish” John Smith’s grandfather.
William Smith was Mary Smith’s father. Mary married our ancestor, Michael McPhillips, and they lived in Corravilla town land which is adjacent to Tonagh and Liscumisy town lands shown above. Incidentally, you may wonder what the dates mean above. These are the dates the lease was signed by these Irish tenants. Michael McPhillips’ father was named Patrick. This list shows only one Patrick McPhillips. This may or may not be our ancestor.
Terms of these leases were generally for one life, or twenty-one years.
