Jeanne Marie's Family Line![]()

TRACHY FAMILY HISTORY
This is the family tree for our great great grandmother, Jeanne Marie (Trachy) Turgeon. Jeanne married our great great grandfather, Cesaire Turgeon. The Trachy family can trace its origin to a single person living in 1275 A.D. in Jersey, which is one of the Channel Islands. Jersey is one of the English-Norman islands situated 80 miles east of England and 15 miles west of France. There is only one Trachy family living in Jersey and none in Guernsey. All the rest moved to Quebec, Canada, years ago.
Richard Trachy in 1331 A.D. was one of the twelve jurymen in the parish. He is the first Trachy on record, and quite possibly the originator of the Trachy line.
The Trachy family members are relatively new to Quebec. Benjamin Trachy, co-owner of a schooner "The three sisters" came to Quebec from JERSEY with 2 of his sons, Abraham (1794-1871) and Edouard (1800-1887) who never returned to Jersey because they fell in love with 2 sisters, Louise and Suzanne Bourget. Abraham and Edouard who were communicants of the Church of England became Roman Catholics the day before their wedding. Abraham was our great great grandmother Jeanne’s father.
Jersey Census Information
Jersey has never been populous. The 1788 census, taken on April 9th, shows 20,025 people living on this island. Much of the detailed census information was lost, but the inhabitants’ names were not destroyed:

Over the years the Trachy clan began moving out of Jersey Island to other parts of the world. The 1841 census showed only the following Trachy family still living in Jersey:
Esther Trachy 50 Y
Elizabeth Trachy 17 F.S. Y
Philip Trachy 25 Farmer Y
John Trachy 60 Farmer Y
The 1881 census for the British Isles showed 68 Trachy surnames living in the Channel Islands, of which Jersey is one part. The 1881 Canadian census showed 41 Trachy surnames tallied. All Trachys are related to each other as they can trace their lineage to one person living in the thirteenth century A.D.
An architectural feature of many old Channel Islands houses that fascinate families in search of their heritage are datestones, sometimes referred to as Marriage Stones.
The initials of husband and wife and a date were often carved on a piece of granite and used as a lintel above the front door. Sometimes the two names have between them a heart (or two entwined hearts - as above) hence the description marriage stone. These stones rarely commemorate a marriage, but usually mark the inheritance, construction or alternation of a building. Here are several examples of Trachy datestones.
801. PTC.ICB.1748. Philippe Trachy and Jeanne Corbet m. (St My) 14.11.1707 not retrospective despite the gap of 41 years between their marriage and the date on the stone. Philippe and Jeanne were both buried in 1772; Les Jardins, near Six Rues (St My). .

Family historians are always interested in locating the family home or address of an ancient ancestor. The road identified on this map would seem to point where the Trachys family farm was located.
