Leavenworth, Kansas - Nihill & Burke families (decendants of James & Nancy Ryan, Allamakee, Iowa)
We started researching our family tree about three years ago, and in general we tend not to pay for research. However, on occasion we have found it necessary.
For example....
We have used researchers to trace our family heritage in Tipperary, but because Catholic records are "owned" by the Catholic Archdiocese, you really don't have a choice. For both Monaghan & Tipperary Counties, we have invested in inexpensive data sources to help us with our search (maps, census, etc.). We also have to pay for information received from the National Archives, death certificates, and other similar items. At this point we have not invested in web tools like "Ancestry.com". We also "contribute" to historical societies that also help us find information. As a general rule, for the few times we have used research organizations, we have been happy with their results...however, there are always exceptions.
In the case on your right, we asked the Leavenworth historical society for obituaries based on birth and death information we had in our possession. In return they gave us the same information that we sent in originally...plus a bill for $20.
