Terryglass Civil Parish, Upper Shanakill Townland
We could not find a description of the Civil Parish; however, we did find an on-line article describing the surrounding area of Terryglass village. A monastery was founded by St. Columba in 549 AD. It became a center of learning and produced about 1150 AD the Book of Leinster, which is an important collection of history, tales and poems in Middle Irish. The Vikings frequently raided the abbey, and in 1264 the abbey was burned. There are two spring wells. One, St. Augh’s, known locally as the Eyewell, is located at the quay. It was named after the saint who lived there in the ninth century, and local folklore maintains this water has curative powers. The second spring known as the Headache well is located further up from the village and is reputed to cure migraine headaches.

It appears that the Campbell family line has been in Toem Civil Parish for many years. We first look at the 1823 Tithe Applotment Record to see if any Campbell names are listed. There are none as the following lists shows. Does that mean Campbells are new to this area? No. Many Tipperary Irish refused to pay the tithe to the Established Church of Ireland (Anglican) and their names would have appeared on a different list showing the Tithe Defaulters. We do not have a copy of this list. Also, it is possible no Campbell living in the Parish met the requirements for paying the tithe.

As you have read before, the Catholics in Ireland were persecuted in some form or fashion since at least the seventeenth century. In vain, the English Crown tried to untie the bond between the Irish and the Pope in Rome. In 1766 a Religious Census was taken of all inhabitants of Ireland. The following list shows a Campbell living in Parish Toem in the year 1766. So Campbells have been living in this area for many years. In a related search we could not find reference to any Boneys living in this area in 1766, although we did find a ‘John Bony’ living in Toem Civil Parish during the mid-nineteenth century. ‘Toom’ is an earlier version of ‘Toem’.
