Mary Rita Jacobsen had mentioned that the Ryans either came to Allamakee County with relatives...or joined relatives who were already in the territory.   Initially we believed it was one of the Ryan families who lived around the James and Ann Ryan farm in Union Prairie township, but later we discounted this connection as these were "different Ryans from different parts of Tipperary".  This became especially apparent once we located the Ryan homeland in Tipperary, Gortnaskehy town land, which was a few miles east of Newport, Tipperary.

As we began to research cemetery records in Allamakee County, we came across a burial entry for Bartholomew Campbell, and began to wonder if the "relatives" that our family history noted were the Bartholomew Campbell family.  Our interest peaked after we began collecting baptismal records from the Catholic Archdiocese in Tipperary because a baptismal sponsor for Mary Ryan, daughter of James and Ann Ryan, was "Barth Campbell"  (see FINDING SCHOOL HILL).  We could not link Bartholomew with our family because Tipperary Church records are incomplete, and the only siblings for Ann Campbell that the Catholic Archdiocese could find were "John" and "Mary" Campbell.   However, we believed he was, at a minimum, a cousin to Ann.

When we reached out to Jim Campbell in Waukon, we received something that we didn't expect to see.  The family chart (on your left) shows that Bartholomew's parents were James Campbell and Mary Carey (or Casey).  This is exactly how we received Ann's family line from the Tipperary Catholic Church - it proved that Bartholomew was a BROTHER to Ann...not a cousin.   What makes this linkage also interesting is that both the James Ryan and Bartholomew Campbell families lived within a mile from each other in Union Prairie township (see TOWNSHIP).

1st Generation:

James Campbell & Mary Casey

The only obituary we had was one provided by the Allamakee Historical Society, and it noted that Mr. Campbell was born in "La Prairie".   We suspected that this was a misunderstanding for the word "Tipperary", but what intrigued was initially was that he was Catholic.  There are few Campbells in Tipperary, and a "Catholic Campbell" is even rarer.

The additional obituaries provided show that he was from County Tipperary.  In addition it showed that he was born in 1817, which made him about Anne's age (she was born in 1816).
