March 6, 1842

Attached is the baptismal registration for John Smyth of St. Mary's church in Aghabog for March 6, 1842.  John's baptismal sponsors were Thomas Greenan and Ann Greenan.  As you know, Catholic church records of the time were mostly written in Latin.  So the names are Latinized for the most part.  John Smyth will appear as:

                                                     Ioannes (Jonis) Smyth

So it appears 'Irish' John Smith was actually born 'John Smyth'.  Another thing is that 'Irish' John's tombstone is wrong.  It shows 1841 and should be 1842.

If you look at the Greenan family historical document (see GREENANS), you will see that there was a Thomas Greenan living in Faltagh townland.  Faltagh is adjacent to and south of Rossnaglogh East, Irish John's home turf

Tim further writes:

"I will ask the Mormons if I can copy the rest of the parish records.  If not, then I will transcribe the rest.  The only real problem will be the marriage announcement stuff as it is all in Latin.  I only understand the word 'banns'.  Also, you were wondering about death records.  I couldn't find them in this parish record but suspect the reason is simple.  Death is not a sacrament.  The only sacraments the book recorded was marriage and baptism.  There was no mention made of first communion, confession, confirmation, or extreme unction.  The microfilm contains another parish record from the Clones area and it too did not contain much of anything else.  The only mention of death I saw was when a child died before being baptized.

I collected all the Smyth, Greenan, McPhillips entries I could.  Perhaps at a later time we may discover that Irish John had an unaccounted brother or sister"
