GEN McPHILLIPS AND FRANK SMITH

WISCONSIN McPHILLIPS

Cross Plains is where Irish John Smith's family began life in Wisconsin. We know this because Irish John Smith was a farmhand for a local farmer outside of Cross Plains. We also see his mother referenced for the first time in 1860 census - at this time married to William Rooney. While we are not certain when the family moved to Wisconsin, it most likely was after 1856. There is a news article of a 16 year old "John Smith" who lived on Walworth Street tending an ailing horse (Walworth Street in Brooklyn is a short four blocks long). MARGARET McPHILLIPS

While we show a connection to this family through the McCarville line, this genealogical connection is through her children.  Because she and her husband lived in Cross Plains during the Civil War, it is quite likely that this family was related to ours through the Smyth or McPhillips side.
Margaret McPhillips was born in 1820. She had one son with Patrick Coyle in May 1860. She died on November 5, 1899, in Dane, Wisconsin, having lived a long life of 79 years.  We know she was born in Ireland, but her parents are unknown.
Patrick Coyle lived in Cross Plains, Wisconsin, on July 1, 1863

Edward Coyle was born in May 1860 the child of Patrick and Margaret. He married Catherine McCarville on June 12, 1894, in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. They had three children during their marriage. He died on March 21, 1915, in Dane, Wisconsin, at the age of 54.

This was not the only Coyle family related to ours:  On the death of Peter Smith from Kimball, SD, the Coyle cousins from Wisconsin attended his funeral in 1952.
