WISCONSIN McPHILLIPS
Cross Plains is where Irish John Smith's family began life in Wisconsin. We know this because Irish John Smith was a farmhand for a local farmer outside of Cross Plains. We also see his mother referenced for the first time in 1860 census - at this time married to William Rooney. While we are not certain when the family moved to Wisconsin, it most likely was after 1856. There is a news article of a 16 year old "John Smith" who lived on Walworth Street tending an ailing horse (Walworth Street in Brooklyn is a short four blocks long).
